College
« on: September 13, 2007, 06:05:44 AM »
Is anyone here attending a college or university?

If not, it sucks and it's expensive. Don't do it. Live off a webcomic or something for the rest of your life.

That's a pretty narrow look at the world. Do you know how many webcomic artists are successful enough with their comics to actually not have to hold down a regular job? A very small percentage, possibly even less than 5% of all webcomics. And to do this, the webcomics have to be GOOD. This requires drawing and storytelling talents that not a lot of people necessarily have. And you know how these webcomic artists do survive? Through the donations and purchases of those who read the comic, and if those who read the comics are barely thriving themselves, then they're not likely to purchase things.

A university or college education is a good thing. It may seem expensive and pointless now, but it will more than pay for itself in the future.

I am attending college, specifically the University of Buenos Aires's College of Philosophy and Letters. It's a "free" college (I still have to buy textbooks) and most of classes are taught well by competent people. I'm coursing the carreer of Letters, which I used to translate as "Literature" but isn't as much about literature as I thought it would be.
On the other hand, I do have a nasty habit of doodling in class when the professor is rambling a bit, and of making paper planes with the fliers several in-college political groups hand us out. I guess I may end up getting suboptimal grades because of those little childish habits. <.<

There's always skilled trades. One semester of learning, then your apprenticeship (which earns you money while you learn). My brother is in school right now to become an electrician.

That's always true.

Skilled trades are a good route for those who can't stand universities and post-secondary education.

In all honesty I do like going, I just don't like the work and reading that comes with it but then again how often does anyone like that?

If anyone is curious, I attend Holy Family University and I am a Freshman. I am so far enjoying my first year, though I am not a resident on campus so maybe next year I'll get the full college experience. I am working towards a major in Education.

I'm not going to go into this a lot, but my view point is pretty much... going to college is usually only useful so that you can say you have a degree... it may or may not have anything to do with what you do, but you have to have it or you won't get to do it...  :'(  Um... whatever.  Clearly I'm not educated.

Very self deprecating of you.

But he's right, doesn't matter how smart you are, people like hiring people with pretty pieces of paper that say, "Look, I can haz compewter skillz!" A friend of mine (brilliant guy, mensa and everything) had trouble getting a job as a programmer because, even though he could write a website from scratch, built a couple of freeware programs, and a couple other things, he never finished college to get his degree. So, have mad skillz and know someone in the industry you want to get into, or get a degree.

Yar, a degree is almost as good as nepotism... but only almost.  I'm planning to go to college again come next year, cause I can get my job to pay for it.  :-D

DItto, but I'm easing myself back into it. I never much liked the classroom.

Well, I can understand the point of degrees though.

I mean, when you have many applicants for a position, it's hard to test all of them, to see if they know what you need them to know. Whereas, if they've passed a course teaching this information, then they must know it, at least to some degree.

Also, DoR, if you can't afford college, there's always student loans and such. Also, don't exclude the idea of scholarships. Not all scholarships are based upon academic merit, just a large majority of them.

I myself am planning on going to a university somewhere in Canada, and I've narrowed it down to about 4, though I'll end up applying to at least 6.

May I ask how one applies for college in Canada? In Australia we have an intensely complex system of rankings, marks and scaling of subjects that I won't even attempt to explain which eventually spit a number called a UAI which depending on how high it is, you submit to a university for a specific course and the top however many students can get in are accepted eg, for law at the University of New South Wales you need a UAI of about 99.5 to be accepted. I'm pretty sure that its diffirent over there though.
