Well, I can understand the point of degrees though.
I mean, when you have many applicants for a position, it's hard to test all of them, to see if they know what you need them to know. Whereas, if they've passed a course teaching this information, then they must know it, at least to some degree.
Also, DoR, if you can't afford college, there's always student loans and such. Also, don't exclude the idea of scholarships. Not all scholarships are based upon academic merit, just a large majority of them.
I myself am planning on going to a university somewhere in Canada, and I've narrowed it down to about 4, though I'll end up applying to at least 6.
