In Nomine Epicus ~ The Return

It was on our journey home one evening, that my companion caught site of a group of older boys, beating and kicking a younger boy in the streets. This boy seemed of no consequence to anyone really, he was a street urchin if anything, but still my companion stopped our carriage and stared at him with the very deepest of thoughts. As the older boys took turns hitting the younger one, my companion began to grimace slightly at the severe beating the boy was actually taking I think. Then...as I was looking at my companion, a wide-eyed smile crossed his face, and I turned my head to see what it was he was in fact now smiling at. I was amazed...only the younger boy was still standing, and the others were on the ground, in what looked like from where I was...a lot of pain.

"Boy?" my companion then shouted as he jumped off our carriage and ran towards him, "Come...come quickly if you wish to be safe my friend." He added as he stopped next to a bench by the side of the roadway.

"Here...hurry, I will keep you safe I promise." He added as the boy happily ran to my companion with great speed.

"In Nomine Epicus." My companion said with a smile.

"Sir?" the boy asked perplexed.

"I have been waiting along time for you to arrive my friend. Sit...please...there is something I must tell you boy. It is a secret of sorts...a secret...a very old and very dear friend once told me." He said as he reached under his finely tailored coat and removed a sword glistening of silver.

As the boy quickly pulled back in fear, my companion placed the sword on the bench beside him and began to speak in a soft and caring voice. "Please...don't be afraid. A friend of ours entrusted this to me, long ago. Take it, hold it if you wish, I promise you my friend I mean you no harm at all. I would never harm you...on my life I swear this too you." He said as the boy slowly walked back towards him, and stared at the sword with interest.

"Pick it up. I bet it's a perfect fit to your hand." He added with a smile.

As the boy reached down and picked up the sword, he furrowed a brow full of perplexity.

"Sit...sit and listen carefully now, for I will not speak these words to you again." He then said as the boy sat down beside my companion, and stared at him in a familiar way.

"Indeed." He began with a smile, "Indeed." He then added as he inhaled deeply. "There will come a time in your life...a time when, you think that the very fabric of your own reality is unravelling before you. A time when, you think that there is no way, anything you are seeing or feeling could ever possibly be real. But it is...of this I assure you, just as you are so very sure now, that that sword you are holding, is as familiar to you, as the clothing upon your back is. And when this time comes, you should not fear it, nor should you run away from it, but you should take the necessary steps to understand it, and...maybe even embrace it to whatever capacity you are able too at that moment. It is a gift, your gift, one you were meant to understand, and one you are meant to share."

As the boy continued to stare at my companion, he also continued to hold the sword in a very knowing way. It appeared to me, at least, that he in fact did find the sword to be familiar. This pleased my companion greatly and he said so as he stood up.

"Now go...go and find your way, and be as strong and compassionate as I know you shall be eventually. Take heed though...the road is long, an the journey even longer." He said as he got on one knee in front of the boy, "Take the sword, it is yours, and I live in the large estate just outside of the glade by the river. If you ever need anything, or ever want for anything...my door is always open to you...always. Do you understand me my friend?"

The boy simply nodded, and my companion then rose and closed his coat back up, "Good...then I take my leave my friend." He added as he and I climbed back into our carriage for the ride home.

"Sir?" The boy then asked much to my companion's surprise, "Thank you kind Sir. May I please know your name so I may call you by it?"

As my companion grabbed the reins firmly, he looked down at the boy and smiled as a single tear fell from his eye, "Once...long long ago, you used to call me Warrior." He replied as he choked back a second tear, "But if you like...you may call me friend."

"I think I like Warrior if you don't mind Sir." The boy responded with a half smile.

"As you wish 'old man'" my companion replied with a bow, as he snapped the reins and our horses began to move away.

As I looked back for a moment, I saw the boy bowing and holding the sword to his forehead as we were leaving. The Harbinger was right after all. He had returned the sword Selima entrusted to him, to its rightful owner.

In Nomine Epicus ~ Before the 'Storm' Pt. 1

I tried for a very long time to rationalize this in my head before I decided to enter it here. There were times I must admit, even as I was writing it, that...I had to step away from the paper and go for a walk to clear my head. But like all the times before, the moment I returned to the book, those thoughts and feelings seemed all to real to ignore. And as a result of those feelings...the following passage was then entered into our 'now' ancient book...

"Sometimes I swear 'old man', you're loosing it, you know that?" He said with his typical air of sarcasm, "Our sisters would never take that route and you know it. Especially Selima...she would take the shortest path, and that is clearly through the cemetery, not the road as you seem to think it is."

"Yes Warrior, Selima especially would I agree, but I can guarantee she would not go trudging through a cemetery...particularly...at night. She would..."

"And you say I'm bull headed?" the nameless one then shot back interrupting, "And what makes you so sure if I may ask?"

Stopping my steed quickly, I then did the one thing I had never done before...ever. I squared off against 'The Harbinger'...bravado intact, right up to his face. "Because she wouldn't...now either follow me, or go your own way. I don't really care..."

"As you wish my friend." He replied interrupting once again as sarcastically as always, "I never wanted them to go off on their own anyway." He added as he started a full out gallop...right through the cemetery gates.

"Damn you Warrior!" I replied, and a few moments later, I was right behind him again.

It was way too dark for us to see, and he knew that I could tell by the way he was holding back on the reins somewhat, but of course, he would never ever admit to being wrong, so we continued on our way. Moments later, he stopped and dismounted claiming his horse was stepping in every hole there was, and he didn't feel like getting a new mount if this one broke it's leg or became injured.

I grinned to myself, not that he could see my face anyway, and dismounted as well. Then retrieving a torch from my pack, I lit it and we walked our mounts through the rows of headstones slowly.

"What the hell?" he then said sounding somewhat perplexed, "Shine that over here." He added referring to my torch of course.

"What is it?"

"I have no idea, but something's caught on the bindings on my boot." He replied as he grabbed the torch from me, and lowered it towards his foot. A split second later, he had drawn his sword and was swinging it at the ground frantically.

"What the hell is that?" I asked confused.

"Some kind of snake or something I think." He replied as he sheathed his weapon, and climbed back on his steed with haste.

"Heh...the mighty Harbinger, foiled by a..."

"Don't you even finish that statement 'old man', or I swear to you..."

"Hahaha...come on my friend, the exit is just over there." I replied as I started to gallop away.

A few minutes later, we were clear of the cemetery and back on the road to the next town.

"Well it's about time you two got here." A familiar voice then said, "We were about to go on with out you." Selima said in her usual matter of fact way, "Please don't tell me you took the long way around the cemetery?"

"Well, If it was up to the ..."

"Warrior? What's that on your boot my friend?" I asked interrupting just in time to save myself a major embarrassment in front of Selima.

Looking down, the Harbinger jumped of his horse quickly, and again unsheathed his weapon and swung it in the direction of his foot.

"Is that an...an arm?" our sister asked somewhat perplexed.

"Oh shut it ok?" the harbinger shot back, as he got back on his horse and began to ride away towards the next town again.

"What the hell?" Selima asked somewhat annoyed.

"Come on." I laughed, "I'll tell you on the ride to town."

"You will do well to keep your mouth shut 'old man'." He yelled back towards us, "Or I swear..."

"Or maybe not huh?" I retorted as we began to follow our somewhat spooked friend with haste.

Dedicated to my Little Sister

In Nomine Epicus ~ Before the 'Storm' Pt. 2

...With Selima and our Sister continuously asking me what had happened, and the Harbinger glaring at me with the rising sun, I for once found myself in a somewhat awkward position. I had hoped he would just fess up to the inquisition, but no...not him, he stayed quiet and silently laughed at me I'm sure, as I dodged question after question from our Sisters.

All I truly remember next, is waking up to the sun shining on my face, the taste of blood and sand in my mouth, and the sound of Selima and the Harbinger arguing and my Sister asking if I was ok.

"I am my sister, but may I ask why I am laying on the ground like this?"

"We were ambushed, and you were hit first...by a very large club I might add."

As I placed my hand on the side of my head and felt the warmness of my bloody wound, I immediately began to realize just how big this club must have been, for my head was throbbing with pain, and the lump was quite big.

"He's awake!" she then yelled towards Selima and our Brother, who stopped arguing long enough to walk over to see if I was ok or not.

"How's the head old man?" he asked half sarcastically and semi concerned as Selima stared from behind him.

"Not sure really." I replied, "I'm more concerned as to why you two are arguing right now actually?"

"You know Selima." He replied as he turned and shot her a glare, "Selima is Selima right?"

"And exactly what the hell is that supposed to mean?" she returned quickly and angrily.

"It means exactly what I said." He replied with his own amount of anger, "Leaving is not an option...no matter how many wounds we suffer, we suffer them together as we have always done, as I am sure we always will." He added as he bent down beside me and checked my head.

"It's going to hurt for a while my friend." He said compassionately, "but if you can endure the pain, I'm sure you'll survive as you always have."

"Yeah, I know." I replied holding my hand as I tried to stand, "It's just that..."

"Should you be standing already?" Selima asked rather pointed as if saying 'what the hell are you doing'

With the Harbinger and my Sister holding me up, I replied rather dizzily and unsure of my footing, "If I don't stand now, how will I ever fight with you again my friend?" I replied, "If I don't stand up, I might as well just curl up in a hole and die no?"

"That's so not the point, and you know it!" she retorted angrily, "What I meant was..."

"I'm aware of what you meant Selima." I then interrupted with a smile, "I'm ok...honest."

"You better be or else." She snapped back as she turned and started walking away.

"Where that hell are you going?" the Harbinger was quick to ask.

"For a walk jerk."

"Selima, wait...I'll come with you." Our Sister interjected trying to calm the mood as I watched and listened slightly confused.

"No...I want to go by myself, but thank you all the sa..."

"Then leave your weapon behind." The Harbinger interrupted in no uncertain terms.

"Like hell I will you bloody idiot, not with..."

"Then I'm coming with you." He again interrupted.

"No...I'm going alone and that's that."

"Warrior?" I asked confused, "What did I miss..."

"No...you are not." He again interrupted as he walked straight up to her and stared at her with the wickedest stare I have ever seen upon his face.

Then with a slight smirk, Selima dropped her weapon belt, and her sword, and said "Fine jerk." The turned and walked away slowly.

"Will someone please tell me what I missed." I asked again, still very confused and sore as well.

"Come my friend." My Sister then said as the Harbinger just watched Selima walking away, "Come sit on the rocks over there with me and I'll fill in."

"Please..." I replied as again, the Harbinger only watched Selima walking away, and said nothing.

After 20 minutes or so, I yelled to the Harbinger who was still looking in the direction Selima had walked in. Reluctantly he approached, and I asked if he felt Selima was serious about leaving.

"Yeah, she feels she is endangering us by being with us. If assassins are now after her, we are going to have a hell of a time of it as we travel."

"And that means what to me?" I asked sarcastically.

"Nothing...as it doesn't to us as well." He replied looking at our sister who now smiled at us.

"Exactly as I thought." I replied as I stood up, checked my footing, and began walking in the direction Selima had gone. "And she'll be so upset and mad at herself if something happens to one of us, and she isn't around."

"Indeed... and where are you going?" he asked somewhat concerned.

"To talk to our friend over there." I replied as I placed my hand upon my head.

"Are you sure that's wise?" our Sister asked in a concerned tone.

"Maybe not," I replied, "But it needs to be done so."

"Don't ever call me stubborn again old man." The Harbinger said in his ever-present sarcastic tone.

"I wouldn't dream of it Warrior." I replied with a smirk, "I'll be back in a bit ok."

"As you wish my friend." He replied as he then sat on the rock I was just on, and began to remove his boots and shake out the sand.
"Oh that's tact for you." I heard our sister say in a very condescending tone.

"Oh shut it ok." He replied as I then heard then both laughing.

***

About 15 minutes later, I found Selima. She was standing by a lake tossing rocks into it. She had a somewhat angered and concerned look on her face as I walked up along side her holding my head, then she just turned away and started tossing rocks again.

I guess about 15 more minutes passed by, but I just stood there and she just kept tossing rocks into the lake. At one point I kind of stumbled a bit, and lost my balance. Selima was quick to run to me, but said nothing only gave me that glare of hers.

"What?" I asked sheepishly, "You think a bit of pain and a bit of distance is going to keep me from standing by your side my friend?"

She said nothing in reply. Only glared at me again, made a semi funny huffing sound, and started heading back towards our companions.

"Umm...don't worry about me, I'm fine..." I said as she began walking quicker, "...I'll just be behind you in your shadow my friend..." I added sarcastically.

"As I always am." I whispered to myself.

But...She apparently heard me though, because she stopped, turned around and threw the last rock she had in her hands at me, and hit me square in the stomach, then continued walking away towards our brother and sister again.

"What the hell was that for?"

(Note from Mike: No, I did not write this. I am posting this for C-A who, at the time of posting, is currently unable to do so himself. So, everything (other than this) is his.)

If all goes well, and as planned, (Months of planning and writing actually =.=;;;;), this will be the first story in this series that I have actually written, before the event occurs. Not so much as in foretelling the future, but rather...coaxing the present, and allowing the past to catch up I suppose. And then, and only if it works properly, it gives the appearance of me telling a tale int the future, from the past, about a tale from even farther past which is being read in the present   :/

-head explodes-

Hahaha...well...lets just see what happens she we? <_<

Also, there are two short audio links you have to click as well (the coloured text) ...umm...for dramatics of course. HEAVY Emphasis on the dramatics. And lastly, my apologies to Sibilla ahead of time. I know the audio makes you "scream" somewhat my friend.

In Nomine Epicus ~ The Harbingers Storm

"Finally" she said to herself as she gazed upon the package she now held tightly within her grasp. "I can't wait to see the look on the jerk's face either." She added with a coy little smile and a slight laugh.

As she got herself ready to go, she remembered the words the 'old man' had spoken to her a few days earlier and opened the one side of the package and removed a letter intended for the eyes of the 'nameless one' only. Written upon it was simply this "Harbinger...Warrior...Brother...Friend." and knowing how her 'brother' would react when he saw this, a small tear fell from her eye as she jumped in her car and headed off to deliver the package with haste.

Moments later she arrived.

Quickly exiting her car, she ran to the door and burst threw yelling her 'brothers' name the whole time.

"What the hell is wrong?" he replied in a slightly worried yet annoyed voice. "Is everything ok?" he added when he saw her pause to catch her breath.

"Yes...yes...everything is fine..." she spoke in-between breathes, "This arrived for you today." She added as she passed the letter to him.

"What the hell?" he replied with a very annoyed sound to his voice, "This had better be good, I've got a lot of things to do today." He added as he snatched the letter away from her and looked down at it. There was a slight pause in his movements as he read the envelope, then slowly he opened the letter and took out the paper that was neatly folded within. Pausing yet again, he unfolded the paper and read it to himself.

"Greetings Warrior.

I hope this finds you in good health today my friend. Heh, I'm sure it does...
Now get that stunned look off your face, and go get our ancient book my friend. Go to the back cover, and remove the lining ever so carefully. For within it is a parchment...a story as yet untold...a story that resides in our past, but one...we've yet to experience as well. A story I knew you could never read until I located the "Harbingers Storm" . That day has finally arrived my friend.
Now do as I say please...and our sister will do the rest whence thou hast read thy story my friend.

In Nomine Epicus my brother"

Looking up at his sister with a glare, he dropped the letter on the table and went off to get the ancient book the 'old man' had referred too. Of course, at that moment she read it as quickly as possible, and returned it to the table before he came back.

"That was a personal letter you know?" he spat as he returned. "And don't tell me you didn't read it, because I know better." He added as he sat down and opened the book to the last page.

"Oh shush...I was curious ok?"

"..."

"Well I was..."

Now sitting beside him with a slight blush, she placed her package on the ground and waited for him to do as the letter had instructed. Sure enough, just as the 'old man' had said, there was a parchment under the back lining. Carefully opening it, he began to read it.

"Ahem"

"Yes?" he replied sarcastically.

"Out loud jerk..."

"Fine..." he said reluctantly as he began to read the story...

My memories are very...disjointed of that day so long ago. Even more so, my memories of the night are even less clear to me. All that remains are a few remnant dreams now and then, a feeling here and there, and of course, your ever constant presence my friend. But just as sure as I write this for you now, I am sure of a few things without doubt. That night, the stars shone brighter then any time I ever remember in this life or any other...and, that is the day I left you two...and left you the "Harbingers Storm" my friend.

You see Warrior...on the previous night; the four of us had been ambushed, and severally out numbered as well. Assassins sent to kill Selima again, and anyone that was with her. That was the second night in a row that this had happened. And much like all the times before this, it was you and Selima that evened the odds and allowed us to survive that night. Our sister and myself, well...we just held our own as we often did. That was also the night...you created the 'storm' I later called... the "Harbingers Storm".

Selima was so angry with you that night too. So very angry, that I do remember without a doubt. I also remember her chastising you quite severally at this point. And if it weren't for the fact you were now holding a broken sword, I am sure she would have taken it from you, and broken it herself. Instead...she laughed at you sarcastically, and said it served you right for dragging your weapon along the ground as you did, when the enemy was clearly in front of you the whole time.

I guess, in your own fashion my friend, you figured if the enemy could not see us, then they could not hit us, so...with every other step you took, you were dragging your sword or your foot across the sand, and creating a dust cloud that proved to be quite the hassle for our attackers. Alas, in the clear star-lit sky, it was quite easy to see our 'sisters' silver weapon glistening, and that in turn worked against us a somewhat. Though in time it mattered neither to you, nor Selima either really as I recall. In a few moments... well, it was the four of us standing there, surrounded by a heap of dead bodies once again. An image that is always very distinctly burned into my mind and my ever-present memories of us all.

It was quite the night my friend.

I don't remember exactly what happened after that, but what I do recall, is waking before you and our sister did the next morning, and finding the note Selima had left for us...

"There is a place and a time for you. for me. for us. But it is not here and it is not now. I leave you in the dead of the night, your faces resting with peaceful sleep - as you deserve. You will wake and I will be far along the road. But maybe the next day, or the next, or the next. You will wake and I will be there waiting for you to catch up. Eventually the sun must rise for our time and place - our road together. For now, I wish you well. I wish you the most peaceful of sleeps, friends. The sun will rise and chase away the horrors of the night. But not tonight. Sleep well."

...she...was gone.

In my heart, I figured it was for our protection more then anything else. Alas...that still did not change what I was about to do.

I hurried off to the smith; left him specific instructions, and returned before you two had awakened...or so I thought anyway. Then I equipped my stead, and prepared for a journey to places I was uncertain of. All I knew, all I felt...was that I was not going to abandon Selima to fend for herself again.

"You know my friend, if she wanted us to come along, surely she would have woken us up no?" You said to me in that ever so matter of fact way.

"Yes Warrior...of this I am very well aware my friend." I replied slightly surprised you were even up, "but sometimes...what Selima says, and what Selima means...aren't the same things at all."

"No really?" you retorted sarcastically as you sat up, "you only figured this out when?"

"Please my friend. Now is not the time for this. Discussion. Simply, this is something I..."

"I what?" you asked me in that ever present air of sarcasm, "Have to do alone 'old man'?"

"Yes Warrior, if you must know..."

"Will-you-two-please-shuttup." Our sister interrupted as she woke somewhat angered at us, "Instead of bickering as you both always do, why don't you try to figure out where she might have gone? This way we can find her and let her know...we are always here for her...no matter what the circumstance. Life or death, happiness or sadness. Just as it has always been no?"

Then, as usual, after much discussion we decided we were going to go and find her. I remember telling you then, that I had to return to the smith to retrieve something, and that I would be back before you two were packed and ready to go.

When I arrived, I inspected the merchandise, smiled and grabbed one of the objects and held it firmly. I remember it being perfect...absolutely perfect. A masterpiece of steel, and a complement to you and your demeanour.

"The Harbingers Storm"

I gently unscrewed the handle, inserted the scroll I had written for you into it, and returned it to the smith and grabbed the other object. It too was perfect. Exactly what our sister needed. No star-lit sky would see that I remember thinking to myself. Near weightless, but all stealth.

"Star light, Star bright, In Nomine Epicus Sister Knight." ...the inscription was also...so perfect.

I then told the smith where to deliver them, and I set out to find Selima...alone.

It would prove to be a very long time before I saw either you or our sister again. I did however find Selima a few years later. And yes she was about as angry as one might assume she would be. It was no matter though...the journey I took? It was worth the trails and trials to get to where I now was.

Know though my friend...I never once forgot about you, or our sister either. And if I must be completely honest with you, many times I turned and looked over my shoulder to see if you were there. I guess, there were times you just felt so truly close by. Selima would always glare at me and lecture me, saying that I should pay attention to the road ahead. That our journey went forward, not backward. That if our paths were meant to cross again, that inevitably they would...as they now have.

So much time had passed Warrior. So much time. And I wondered if I would ever truly know the figure in my memories again. To always see the other side of the mirror, but yet...not behind it as it were. A feeling I was so very glad to have disappear my friend.

In Nomine Epicus.

When he was finished reading, he looked at his 'sister' slightly puzzled. She was not looking at him however, for she had bent down and picked up the package the 'old man' had sent and placed it on the table in front of them.

"Shall we open it...'Harbinger'?" she asked with a very sheepish grin.

"..."

"I thought you might say that." She added smiling, as she opened the package. Then they looked for the first time at the contents within.

"..."

"..."

The Warriors face was all but expressionless as he gazed at the 'Harbingers Storm' now before him. Then reaching in and picking it up, he let his hand engulf the handle tightly as he admired it.

"The handle..." he thought to himself as he remembered the story on the parchment by the 'old man'. Then gently unscrewing it, he saw a tattered, time worn scroll fall out onto the table. Smiling, and reassembling the 'Harbingers Storm', and after admiring it for a few moments longer, he placed it on the table as well and looked at the scroll and then his 'sister' who was admiring her own gift.

Inhaling deeply, he unrolled the tattered scroll carefully and read it to himself quietly. With a smile and a tear in his eye, he swore he could almost hear the 'old mans' voice as he read the words over and over again...

"Your road will be much longer then mine Warrior...even though the journey will eventually take us to that familiar place we both know so well.
For the road my friend...for the long journey...for the tales (yet) untold...
In Nomine Epicus my Brother.
"

A few shout outs for this one; in no particular order I might add.

-Thank you to Whitey for the passage from Selima, and the first audio file. ^_^ You are the best my friend <333

-Thank you to my favourite Internet DJ for the help with Audacity (/sigh) and the second audio clip.

-Thanks to Mike for the photography and his help with the Photoshopery....umm, twice -_- ( Not that anyone but OwA can see it actually <_< ) And for posting this in my stead.

-And last but not least. I huge thank you to Nemesis. For the proof reading, the sneakery, the planning and the plotting. Without your help my friend, I would not have been able to pull this off at all. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. "Star light, Star bright, In Nomine Epicus Sister Knight." -bows-
