Web Browsers
« on: June 10, 2008, 06:05:26 PM »
What's a decent, reliable browser that isn't a resource hog?

I'm currently using Firefox but it seems to be getting slower every day, particularly while viewing DeviantART (which likes to force refreshes every other minute, god knows why, it's annoying as hell and if there is any way to block that, PLEASE enlighten me e_e) or youtube. I know those are heavy sites but sometimes I feel like I'm using dial-up again. Of course I don't know if this is entirely the browser's fault (I'm not very tech-savvy, and I don't think it's SOLELY Firefox) but I've heard other people complain about Firefox hogging resources. CPU usage varies from 10-90%(!), and it's a real pain. So, I figured I might as well find something better.

Suggestions?

You're going to get a whole pile of replies to this, especially from Mike, but I really don't care what anyone else says. This is the easiest way to lessen FireFoxes Memory whoring/suckage/usage/f***er upperer and it works. I have the same issue, and it works good for me. Also clearing the personal data on occasion helps as well.

The page has a few other tricks on it as well...and again, they work.

Hmm, I just read on wikipedia that Firefox 3 will be out sometime this month. Perhaps I should wait and see if it's any good? Regardless, thanks a bunch for that link FA :)

I was going to suggest the trim on minimize, darn.

Other than the memory leak, FF is my favorite browser, followed by Opera. Firefox 3 has fixed the memory leak. I used the beta version of it, but there were too many of my plugins that were incompatible, so I uninstalled it. I've since found another configuration fix for that, but I'll wait until the end of the month for the stable release.

One of my favorite features about firefox is the vast amount of plugins. Some things like Adblock plus, download statusbar, and foxmarks are an absolute must for me. I could go on more, but I have more addons to install. :P

So is it really that good? I haven't gotten it and therefore my browsing is the same. Just wondering if it's worth the VAST effort to download?

Well, it's certainly better than the previous Firefox in terms of mem usage. They also introduced tags, which I like. I'm not too sure I like the slight changes in the interface, but it's worth the vast effort to download. :P

Well, having used it since download day (geek world record ftw!) I must say I'm impressed.

Like Interrobang said, the mem usage is negligible, especially compared to FF2. I had some issues at the beginning, mostly due to my addons being incompatible with FF3, but the majority of those have been fixed. My only recurring problem is Gmail is not fully integrated with FF3 yet, so I don't have access to the chat or my calendars, but I'm sure they will get it fixed.

On a sidenote, you know how when you start typing in a url in the address bar the drop down menu appears and it also includes bookmarks and links who's titles (as opposed to urls) match the characters you're entering? How do you disable that?

Edit: fixed.

Edit 2: Okay, I took my old post and decided to move it into a new post, because I have yet another question and I want people to notice that this topic has been updated without having to double-post ^^;

Has anyone else had problems with flash? I play this game called poupee (pupe.jp) which is flash-heavy, and firefox doesn't always acknowledge when I click on a button, although most of the site is functional. This problem also appears when I watch movies on some sites (like, if I click "stop," or "play", or the audio button, it doesn't acknowledge it. Youtube works fine, but other sites don't). I don't know if all of it has to do with flash (I'm not very tech-savvy, so forgive me), but I would appreciate any input or suggestions. Sorry for the vagueness; please feel free to ask further questions so as to ascertain wtf is going on :/

Whatda we have the same PC or what? :-\
I have exactly the same issue. FireFox hates flash on my PC...no idea why. I usually have to resort to I.E. to watch movies, play games, etc.

Maybe Ow A D has a fix for that too  :-X

What version of flash do you have installed? I was able to run the site with no problems. When you say it doesn't always recognize mouseclicks, are you trying to add clothes or remove them? Is it consistently the same functions that you are unable to do, or is it random?

I don't believe youtube uses flash for the videos, but it does use it to select a different clip.

Actually, it's the "suteki" button that's giving me problems- it's the big yellow button underneath items in people's closets. When you click it a bunch of flowers pop up. It's used to increase the "cute" score. And it's consistently the same functions that I am unable to perform.

I can't find any specific sites where I had the video problems, BUT- you know how on myspace you can install a music player and have a specific song play when someone visits your page? The buttons for the music player don't respond. They used to respond when I had Firefox 2 installed.

I just selected a different clip at the end of a video on youtube and it worked.

How do I check what version of flash I have?

Sorry if this is poorly worded. I am exhausted from work. Thanks in advance.

One of the many wonderful features of Firefox 3 is the ability to view and remove plugins through the browser. Go to Tools and click on Add-ons, then select the plugins tab. It should be Shockwave Flash.
