.............................

I was going to say something about my alignment not letting me be evil, but I think I'm going to tweak it now, just for you.

Maybe you're not going as dark as it seemed... that's a kind gesture.

What exactly IS karma?  I mean, I know that you can give people points or take away points if you feel like it every... hour or so...  But I've not seen it on many other sites, and the only other one just kinda gave a half-assed answer and then ignored the post entirely.  I'm just wondering, is there some kind of benefit for having a certain amount?  Like, you get 20 karma, you're allowed to go to a special forum only for high-karma folks.  Probably not but I'd like to make sure seeing as how mine is firmly in the negatives and I don't want to miss out on stuff because of it.

Edit:  Also, Necropost'd.

Don't worry, it's really just a superficial way of judging people. There's no secret forum or whatever.

The general idea is that for good posts, you give good karma (for saying something insightful or intelligent or whatever), but for bad posts, you give bad karma (for being stupid, or spammy or whatever). Thus, one would be able to tell the difference between those who are valuable members (high karma == good posts) and those who are not (low karma == bad posts).

That said, there's no real way to verify any of this, and if you were dedicated enough, you could easily sky rocket someone's karma (24 points/day), or plunge it into the dankest pits of hell (same rate). Or whatever.

I wonder sometimes if I shouldn't just turn it off...

I'll admit having a small amount is a bit belittling when you're chatting with someone who's got over 20, but hey, it's just a rating system.  I was just making sure that there wasn't anything I was missing out on, and there wasn't.  I suppose you could take it out, seeing as how you can usually tell how helpful people are by reading a few of their posts...  But it's really up to you.   ;)

A certain group of people are just smiting and applauding randomly anyway, so...I wouldn't pay any heed to it.  On our old site we used to have to give a reason for the applauding and smiting.  It worked out good while it lasted.

Then the problem there was people getting vindictive for being smited and it became a vicious circle, etc, etc, etc.
