So, Platinum.
Today is the first day one can obtain the "Member's Card" item from WFC, which grants you access to the locked house in Canalave, wherein you can catch Darkrai. So, I grab it, and go in, and get thrown to a new island (conveniently, next to the island with Cresselia).
I go to try catch Darkrai, but I'm way over-levelled compared to him. Plus, none of my party members has any status-inflicting moves. So, I get it as close to dead as possible, and start chucking Utra Balls at it.
*Much time passes*
It runs out of moves, and KOs itself (damn Weavile with Pressure!). So, I reset, intending to go get/find a pokémon with Thunder Wave or something. Load my save (on the island), and find that I cannot leave. Or Fly. Or use Escape Ropes. Fuuuuu-
Okay, only one other option, a technique passed down from the first generation: Fainting all my pokémon, and thus auto-warping back to a Pokémon Center! So, I go back into battle with Darkrai, and this time, I only weaken it a bit (~40% left or so), and then start chucking more Ultra Balls (and, not healing or anything).
I've got two pokémon left, and this is taking forever. While I'm auto-tapping the "Item" spot on the screen, I'm also looking up
the catch rate formula, and figuring out what the odds are of me actually catching it are. (1.56% or so)
Then, I hear "thump, thump, thump, click!"
And, I caught it.
Moral of the story: Um, try to fail, and you'll succeed? I guess?
